Cat-Proof Window Screens: How to Choose One for Windows, Balconies and Front Doors

A cat-proof screen is an insect screen that a cat cannot shred with its claws or push out with its paws when a pigeon lands on the sill. It differs from a regular screen in three ways: thicker mesh, a stronger frame and metal fixings. At OKNODOM we make cat-proof screens in Odesa, in nylon or aluminium, for any window or door, including non-standard openings. Finished screens are shipped anywhere in Ukraine.

My name is Oleksandr Chernov, I am a sales manager at OKNODOM. Many of the calls I take about cat screens start the same way: “My cat has already torn the old screen” or “I’m scared to open the window.” Below I explain the types that exist, how they behave in real homes and how to pick the right one without overpaying.

In short: five things to know before you order

  • A cat-proof screen keeps a cat from falling out of an open window. It will not stop a large dog charging at full speed; dogs need a hinged door screen with a reinforced frame.
  • The mesh is either nylon (vinyl-coated) or aluminium. Nylon is softer and barely blocks the view; aluminium is stiffer and claws simply don’t grip it.
  • There are six mounting types: framed on Z-brackets, Anvis (from the inside, no drilling), pocket mount, hinged, velcro, and velcro with reinforced magnets.
  • Renters usually choose Anvis: it is removed from inside the room and the window frame is never drilled.
  • You can order from any city in Ukraine using your own measurements: send us the sizes and a photo of the opening, we make the screen and ship it.

How a cat-proof screen differs from a regular insect screen

A regular insect screen is built to stop mosquitoes. Its fibreglass mesh, with a strand of about 0.25 mm, lasts a few days against a cat: first snags, then a hole, then the cat is on the neighbour’s ledge. A cat-proof screen has a different job. It must carry the weight of an animal hanging on it with all four paws.

Feature Regular screen Cat-proof screen
Mesh fibreglass vinyl-coated nylon or aluminium
Strand thickness about 0.25 mm about 0.6 mm or more
Cell size about 1×1 mm 1.2–2 mm depending on mesh
Frame light profile reinforced profile, more fixing points
Fixings plastic Z-brackets metal hooks, hinges, pockets
Remove for winter yes optional; metal can stay

One thing rarely mentioned: a screen is only as strong as its weakest part. Put excellent mesh on plastic corner clips and the cat will push out the screen, frame and all. That is why we always look at the whole system: mesh, frame, fixings and the window profile.

Mesh: nylon or aluminium

Nylon mesh (pet screen)

A thick, springy synthetic strand with a vinyl (PVC) coating. Manufacturers of this mesh state it is several times more tear- and puncture-resistant than standard insect screening. It lets air and light through, gives slightly under a paw and is almost invisible from two metres away. People choose it for living rooms, bedrooms and panoramic windows where the view matters.

Best for: most house cats, kittens and calm small dogs.

Aluminium mesh

Metal mesh is stiffer and practically claw-proof. A cat that sharpens its claws on everything loses interest in aluminium fast: there is nothing to hook into. It can stay in place all winter and does not sag in the sun. The one downside: the view is slightly less clear than through nylon, and the mesh is heavier, so we match the frame and fixings to it.

Best for: active and large cats, multi-pet homes and balcony doors that a dog may push.

For maximum strength we also make stainless steel mesh on request. That is the option for Maine Coons and medium-sized dogs.

Six ways to mount a cat-proof screen

Framed screen on Z-brackets

The standard choice for uPVC windows where the screen sits on the outside. The frame is a reinforced aluminium profile with metal brackets. The screen goes on from outside and comes off by its handles. It suits fixed and tilt-and-turn sashes when the outside of the window is reachable.

Anvis screen (inside mount)

The Anvis system attaches to the window frame from inside the room using metal rotating hooks. Nothing is drilled, and the screen is fitted and removed from the flat without leaning out. That is the main reason people above the third floor and tenants choose it. Anvis works with uPVC windows; we match the profile to your system: REHAU, Veka, KBE, WDS, Steko and others.

Pocket-mount screen

Metal pocket holders are fixed at the top and bottom of the window frame. The screen goes into the top pocket, lifts up and drops into the bottom one. It is simple, sturdy and easy to take out for washing. It works well on timber and aluminium windows where Z-brackets don’t fit.

Hinged cat-proof screen door

For balcony doors and terrace exits. It is a separate swing door with a reinforced frame, hinges and handles on both sides. On request we add a magnetic catch or a door closer, so the door shuts by itself and the cat can’t slip out while you carry in the laundry. If you have a dog, we reinforce the lower part with a cross rail and metal mesh at the bottom.

Velcro screen

A soft screen with no rigid frame, attached around the edges with velcro to the window frame or reveal. It is used for non-standard openings, arches and old timber windows where a framed screen has nowhere to sit. To be honest: velcro holds a kitten or a calm adult cat, but a big cat that jumps on the screen regularly will eventually pull it loose. For those cats we recommend a framed screen.

Velcro screen with reinforced magnets for front doors

This one is sewn to your exact size. Two panels on velcro meet in the middle along a seam of strong magnets. You walk through, the panels part and close behind you on their own. We built one for the box office hall of the Odesa Opera and Ballet Theatre: an opening of 2360×810 mm, magnets in the strongest available version, made in three working days. The full story is in our Opera Theatre case study.

For a private house with a cat we sew this screen from tough mesh and use high-force magnets so a push from a paw doesn’t open the seam. Know the limit, though: an adult dog that knows the yard is outside will walk through the magnets just as a person does. For dogs at the front door, a hinged screen door is the better choice.

Which cat-proof screen fits your situation

Your situation What we fit Why
High-floor flat, cat loves the window Anvis, nylon or aluminium fitted from inside, no drilling
Rented flat Anvis or pocket mount no damage, you take it with you when you move
Cat tears every screen framed, aluminium mesh claws have nothing to grip
Balcony or terrace exit hinged door with closer the door shuts on its own
Dog on the balcony or in the house hinged door, metal mesh at the bottom takes a push from paws
Floor-to-ceiling panoramic glazing framed, nylon, frame colour matched the view is barely affected
Arch, odd-shaped opening, old timber windows velcro or pocket mount fits where framed screens don’t
Front door of a house, cat stays in the yard velcro with reinforced magnets, made to measure walk through hands-free

Two stories from our customer reviews

Larysa Chebanova lives in a private house in the Daiberh residential area of Odesa. She needed insect screens for the windows and a cat-proof door screen for the exit to the yard, where her light-coloured cat likes to sit by the glass. The order was handled by our branch in Kotovskoho. Her Google review, translated from Ukrainian:

“We ordered insect screens and a cat-proof door screen for our private house in Daiberh, Odesa. They measured quickly, gave us a quote, the prices are amazing, and three days later they came and installed everything. We’re all very happy! We found the company through Google reviews. Highly recommend!!!”

The frames were made dark grey to match the windows, so there are no white patches on the facade. In the photo the cat sits behind the door screen calmly watching the yard: exactly the picture people buy a cat-proof screen for.

The second story is about panoramic windows. Valeriia Shylo ordered cat-proof screens for floor-to-ceiling glazing with a balcony exit and a black cat who stands on his hind legs and leans his front paws on the mesh.

“I ordered ‘Anti-cat’ screens. Everything was done within one day, measured and installed. Excellent quality!”

One day from measuring to installation. It isn’t always that fast: lead time depends on size and mesh, but across our orders it usually fits within three working days.

Not just cats: screens for dogs

Dogs break screens differently. A cat hangs and claws; a dog pushes with its chest and paws, usually low down. So for dogs we fit a hinged screen door, reinforce the lower third with a cross rail and use metal mesh at the bottom. For a Spitz or a Jack Russell such a door is usually more than enough. For a large dog that throws itself at the door, the honest answer is a metal grille or keeping the balcony door closed: any screen is designed for load, not impact.

How to measure the opening yourself if you’re outside Odesa

We ship finished screens to any city in Ukraine: Kyiv, Lviv, Dnipro, Kharkiv, Mykolaiv, Vinnytsia, Zaporizhzhia and beyond. To make sure the screen fits first time, measure carefully.

  1. Identify the window type: uPVC, timber or aluminium. For uPVC, find the profile brand on the frame edge or in the paperwork.
  2. Open the sash and measure the clear opening width and height in three places. Write down the smallest value.
  3. For an Anvis screen, measure the frame depth and photograph the profile from the side.
  4. For a door, measure from the threshold to the top and the width at three points, and photograph which way the door opens.
  5. Send the sizes and photos to our manager. We check them, ask any questions and send you the price.
  6. We ship the finished screen by courier. Fitting an Anvis or pocket-mount screen takes 10–15 minutes; instructions are included.

How much a cat-proof screen costs and what drives the price

Across the Ukrainian market in 2026, a cat-proof window screen costs roughly UAH 1,700–2,500 per piece, and a door screen from UAH 2,300 upwards. The exact OKNODOM price depends on:

  • size (small screens are usually charged at a minimum area);
  • mesh: nylon, aluminium or stainless steel;
  • mounting: Anvis, pockets, hinges, velcro, magnets;
  • frame colour: white, brown, anthracite, wood-grain or any RAL;
  • door closer, cross rail, extra handles;
  • measuring and fitting in Odesa, or shipping across Ukraine.

You can get a quote on the OKNODOM insect screens page or by phone.

What a cat-proof screen won’t do

A good screen lowers the risk; it doesn’t replace attention. We always mention three things:

  • It doesn’t protect a tilted sash. Cats try to squeeze through the gap at the top and get stuck. Use a tilt restrictor or a safety comb.
  • It isn’t designed for children. Children need handle locks and opening restrictors.
  • Check it once a season: tighten the fixings and look at the mesh corners. Five minutes and you’re done.

Frequently asked questions

Can a cat-proof screen hold a cat’s weight?

Yes, if the mesh, frame and fixings are matched. The screen is designed for a cat hanging on it by its paws. For cats over 7–8 kg and for dogs, choose aluminium mesh, a reinforced frame and metal fixings.

Which mesh is better, nylon or aluminium?

Vinyl-coated nylon is springy, lets light through and barely affects the view. Aluminium is stiffer and claw-proof. Nylon is enough for a calm cat; if your cat sharpens its claws on the screen, choose aluminium.

Can I fit a cat-proof screen without drilling the window?

Yes. The Anvis system clips on from inside with metal rotating hooks, and pocket-mount screens need no drilling into the profile either. That suits rented flats and high-floor windows.

Can I order if I don’t live in Odesa?

Yes. Send us the opening sizes and a photo of the window or door. We make the screen to your measurements and ship it to any city in Ukraine, with fitting instructions included.

Does a magnetic cat-proof screen work on a front door?

It does if your cat stays in the yard of a private house and you want to walk through hands-free. We sew it to size with reinforced magnets. For dogs that know the way outside, a hinged screen door is better.

Do I need to remove a cat-proof screen for winter?

Aluminium screens can stay. Nylon ones last longer if you take them down where the window gets strong sun and frost.

Summary

Choose a cat-proof screen by your cat, your window and your household habits, not by a catalogue photo. A calm cat in a flat is fine with nylon on Anvis; a claw fighter needs aluminium; a dog on the balcony needs a hinged door with a reinforced bottom; a private house can use a made-to-measure magnetic screen on the front door.

Not sure? Write or call us. Send a photo of your window and tell us about your pet, and I will suggest an option and give you a price. In Odesa we come to measure for free; to other cities we ship the finished screen.
