Sliding Service Window for a Restaurant in Odesa: How We Replaced the Old Unit on Lanzheron

Let me tell you about a job that stuck with me — not because it was complicated, but because it was a textbook case. A restaurant in Odesa, on the Lanzheron seafront, Viry Inber Street, 1/5. A place with character, sea views, and guests who expect good service. And a service window that didn’t match either the interior or the practical needs of the kitchen staff.

The owners found us through a blog post — we had already written about a sliding service window for a cafe in Gorky Park. They read it, recognised their own problem, and called. From that first call to completed installation — no unnecessary steps.

What Was Wrong with the Old Service Window

When I arrived for the measurement, I saw the typical picture for venues that opened around ten years ago: a fixed window with a tilt-and-turn vent that either wouldn’t latch or hung open. In winter — a draught across the kitchen. In summer — awkward dish handover, staff reaching and leaning.

The staff had got used to it, but that doesn’t mean it’s acceptable. A sliding window system solves the problem at its root — the sash moves sideways, the opening is fully clear, the movement is smooth and effortless.

What We Recommended and Why

At the measurement we took exact opening dimensions and assessed the workload — how many times per hour the window opens during peak service, the handover height, whether an insect screen was needed. Based on the specific opening and working conditions, we specified an aluminium-profile frame with a roller sliding system.

Aluminium windows aren’t just a material choice here — they’re the right solution for a commercial site: they don’t rot, don’t swell with moisture, don’t warp with temperature swings. For a kitchen with constant steam and temperature changes, that matters. The rollers were specified with a generous load margin so there would be no need to adjust or replace them after a year.

Glass — 6 mm tempered. Not because that’s standard, but because in a service zone the window gets closed with some force at times, and ordinary glass gradually fails along the edge under that kind of use.

Installation: What We Did on Site

Manufacturing took the standard lead time; delivery and installation — one day. We always aim to close out a job in a single visit so the venue doesn’t lose trading time.

We removed the old unit, prepared the opening — levelled it, fixed the frame with anchors, filled with expanding foam under controlled pressure. Then the track installation, hanging the sash, adjusting the rollers and seals. Finished with reveals and external trim. For more on our installation approach, see window installation in Odesa.

I paid particular attention to the track level — even a slight tilt and the sash will either drag or drift open on its own. I checked with a spirit level twice: before fixing and after.

What the Venue Got

A service window that opens with one finger. Smooth, quiet, no binding. The staff noticed immediately — you can tell by how they react when you test it together with them right after fitting.

The owners were happy with both the quality of the unit and the way the work was organised: no delays, no surprises, everything done on the agreed schedule. They left a review — unprompted, in their own words.

Frequently Asked Questions about Service Windows for Cafes and Restaurants

What type of window is best for food service in a restaurant?

A sliding aluminium-profile window. The sash moves sideways and stays out of the way. Tempered 6 mm glass handles the demands of a busy service hatch without damage.

How much does a sliding service window for a cafe in Odesa cost?

The price depends on the opening size, material, colour, and hardware. It is calculated after a free on-site visit. Contact us at oknodom.com.ua or call 0800 33 29 69.

Can the window be replaced without closing the venue?

Yes. VIKNODOM completes installation in one day. The venue can stay open throughout — removal and fitting take only a few hours.

When to Replace a Service Window in a Cafe or Restaurant

A few signs I see on almost every commercial site where the window hasn’t been changed in years:

— The sash is hard to open or sticks. Either the profile has warped or the hinges are worn — both only get worse over time.

— There’s a noticeable draught in winter — the seals no longer hold.

— A tilt or turn sash gets in the way during busy service.

— The unit looks out of place — guests notice.

A sliding window addresses all of these. Especially in Odesa venues where the summer is long and ventilation matters. If you’re planning a refresh, consider insect screens at the same time — essential for any food and beverage outlet.
