Buy Glass in Odesa: Prices, Glass Types and How to Choose the Right One

My name is Yulian Kaprishanskyi and I am a manager at OKNODOM. Between ten and twenty glass enquiries pass through me every day, and roughly half of those conversations start the same way: “Hello, I need some glass, how much is it?” I always answer with a question of my own — what exactly are you making? Because glass for a shelf inside a wardrobe and glass for a shower partition differ from each other about as much as a wood screw differs from an anchor bolt. Both are fasteners, but mix them up and you have a problem.

This article is essentially a transcript of the conversation I have on the phone every single day. It covers everything worth knowing before you buy glass in Odesa: what types exist, how they differ, what thickness to choose, what it costs and where people most often get burned. It is a long read, but afterwards you will call and say not “I need glass” but “I need 8 mm tempered, 700 by 1900, polished edge, two holes for hinges” — and we will price it in five minutes.

Where a glass order actually starts

Before we talk about money, three questions need answering. I ask them of everyone — from a homeowner in Cheremushky who needs glass for a coffee table, to a site manager ordering a glass staircase enclosure in a new building in Tairove.

Question one: what are you making? A shelf, a countertop, a cabinet door, a kitchen splashback, a partition, a shower enclosure, a display case, a stair balustrade, a replacement pane in a sealed unit. Everything else follows from this.

Question two: who and what will come into contact with the glass? There is a real difference between glass only an adult’s hand can reach and glass a child might run into or someone might lean their full weight against. If there is any risk of body impact, the conversation moves straight to tempered or laminated glass. I do not offer alternatives there.

Question three: what are the dimensions, and does the opening already exist? Building furniture from scratch and sizing the recess around the glass is one thing. Fitting glass into a cabinet that already stands in your room, to the millimetre, is another. In the second case we almost always recommend an on-site measurement.

With that settled, let’s get specific.

Glass types: what actually sells in Odesa and what each one is for

Supplier price lists run to dozens of positions, but in the real life of an Odesa customer, seven or eight types do all the work. Here is an honest breakdown of each — where it performs and where you should not use it.

Float — standard clear glass

The baseline product that 80% of everything is made from. Flat surface, good clarity, sensible price. It goes into shelves, furniture doors, tabletops under a cloth, inserts, frames, windowsill covers and replacement panes in old timber windows.

Its main drawback is that it breaks into long, sharp shards. So we never specify float where body impact is possible. A shelf in a wardrobe, absolutely. A bathroom door, no.

Tempered (toughened) glass

Ordinary glass heated to roughly 650 °C and then cooled rapidly. Bending and impact strength increase four to five times, and when it does break it crumbles into small blunt granules that are almost impossible to cut yourself on. That is not marketing copy — that is the difference between a trip to A&E and reaching for a dustpan.

Where it goes: shower enclosures and partitions, glass doors, stair and balcony balustrades, kitchen splashbacks, load-bearing shelves, countertops, façades.

The critical detail people forget: tempered glass cannot be cut, drilled or edge-worked after toughening. Every hole, cut-out, radius and edge finish happens before the furnace. If you ordered a tempered panel 800×2000 with two holes and then discover you needed 795, that is a new panel, not a trim. This is why we ask customers to check tempered dimensions twice, and why we prefer to measure them ourselves.

Laminated glass (triplex)

Two or more sheets bonded with a polymer interlayer. On impact the glass cracks but stays in the interlayer — it does not shower down and it does not leave the opening. It is the only type that keeps its barrier function after breaking.

Where it goes: canopies, treads, floors, overhead glazing, balustrades where falling fragments are unacceptable, shopfronts, and anything to do with security. In Odesa laminated glass has become noticeably more popular in recent years, for reasons that need no explanation.

Satin and acid-etched glass

There are two ways to obtain a matt surface: sandblasting and acid etching (satin). Sandblasting is cheaper but leaves a more porous surface where fingerprints and grease show. Satin is softer to the touch, more even in tone and easier to maintain — and costs more.

Where it goes: interior doors, partitions, wardrobe fronts, showers where privacy matters, decorative inserts. We often combine the two: a matt field with a clear pattern or a clear band.

Body-tinted glass

Coloured throughout — bronze, graphite, grey, green. Unlike film it does not fade or scratch off. It softens the light and hides what is inside a cabinet. Bronze and graphite in furniture fronts have been in strong demand in Odesa interiors for the last couple of years.

Low-emissivity (energy-saving) glass

Glass with an ultra-thin coating that reflects heat back into the room. It is not sold “for a shelf” — it only works as part of a sealed unit. If you are replacing the glazing in a window, this is the component that genuinely affects your heating bill. More on that in our article on insulated glass unit replacement.

Patterned and decorative glass

Reeded, delta, bark, frost and other textures. It diffuses light, hides what is behind it and costs less than satin. A classic in the older housing stock of Moldavanka and the city centre, and in mezzanines and bathroom partitions.

Mirrors

Technically also glass, with a silvered backing. Two variants deserve a mention: low-iron mirror (Diamant), which avoids the familiar green cast, and moisture-resistant mirror for bathrooms. We have two dedicated articles on mirrors — links at the end.

Glass thickness: the table worth saving

The most common ordering mistake is saving money on thickness. The price gap between 4 and 6 mm is noticeable but not dramatic; the reliability gap is fundamental. Here is how I advise choosing.

Thickness Typical use Note from the workshop
4 mm Furniture doors, small shelves up to 40 cm, frames, inserts, replacement panes in old windows The bestseller and the cheapest. Not for large panels
5 mm Medium shelves, fronts, large-format mirrors A sensible compromise when 4 mm already flexes
6 mm Countertops, wide shelves, splashbacks, furniture partitions The workhorse. If you are torn between 5 and 6, take 6
8 mm (tempered) Shower partitions, doors, balustrades, load-bearing shelves The shower standard. Tempered only, no exceptions
10 mm (tempered) Sliding and hinged glass doors, large partitions, stair balustrades For big panels or anything carrying hardware
12 mm (tempered) Entrance sets, full-height partitions, frameless glazing Heavy — plan how you will carry it up the stairs

A separate word on shelves, because this is where it hurts. A 4 mm glass shelf longer than 60 cm will sag over time, especially under books or crockery. The rule is simple: up to 50 cm use 4 mm, up to 80 cm use 6 mm, beyond 80 cm use 8 mm or add a support in the middle.

What glass costs in Odesa and what makes up the price

An honest answer: the “price per square metre of glass” is less than half the final figure. People call, hear the square-metre rate, then receive the quote and are surprised. Let me break down what you are actually paying for.

  1. The glass itself — charged by the area of the blank, not the finished shape. If a complex shape is cut from the sheet, you pay for the rectangle it fits inside.
  2. Cutting — usually included, but shaped cuts, radii and notches are charged separately.
  3. Edgework — mandatory everywhere except where the edge is fully concealed in a profile. Charged per linear metre.
  4. Holes and cut-outs — for hinges, handles, sockets, fixings. Charged per unit, by diameter.
  5. Toughening — charged by area. It adds meaningfully to the cost, but there is no other route to safety glass.
  6. Delivery and carrying — one logic inside Odesa, another for Chornomorsk and Yuzhne. Large, heavy panels need two or three people.
  7. Installation — if required.

Glass prices in Odesa

Let’s start with the bestseller — clear float glass cut to your dimensions.

Clear glass Thickness Price per m²
Float, cut to size 4 mm UAH 900
Float, cut to size 6 mm UAH 1,300
Float, cut to size 8 mm UAH 1,800
Float, cut to size 10 mm UAH 2,840

As you can see, the steps are not linear: 4 to 6 mm costs an extra 400 hryvnia per metre, while 8 to 10 mm adds more than a thousand. So on small pieces the upgrade to thicker glass is barely felt, while on large ones it shows. A 40×60 cm shelf in 6 mm rather than 4 mm costs about a hundred hryvnia more — there is simply nothing to save here.

Tempered glass prices

Tempered glass is priced separately because it is not just cutting — it is a full production cycle with a toughening furnace. Below is the complete list of what we temper.

Product Thickness, mm Price per m²
Clear glass 4 UAH 944
Clear glass 5 UAH 1,179

Tinted mirror (bronze, graphite) 6 UAH 4,037
Laminated 3.3.1 UAH 2,285
Laminated 4.4.1 UAH 2,363

Important. All prices in these tables are per square metre and exclude edgework. Grinding, polishing, bevelling, drilling, cut-outs and delivery are charged separately. Edgework is mandatory on most pieces, so budget for it. We quote your exact dimensions individually — the cutting layout affects the total more than people expect.

Glass processing prices

This is the part of the quote customers rarely budget for, and it can rival the cost of the glass itself. So here is the full price list, with no “ask the manager for details”.

Edgework (polished edge), UAH per linear metre

Glass thickness, mm Straight edge Angled edge Curved edge
3 36 240
4 66 240 240
5 74 240 240
6 86 267 267

10 143 321 321
12 162 404 404
15 450 485 485
19 600 621 621

The maths is simple: multiply the perimeter in linear metres by the rate for your thickness. A 40×80 cm shelf in 6 mm has a 2.4 m perimeter, so roughly 206 hryvnia for the edge. Curved edges — radii and shaped profiles — cost several times more than straight ones, because that is hand work.

Bevel, UAH per linear metre

Bevel width, mm Straight edge Curved edge
10 200 336
15 212 336
20 234 336

Internal milled cut-out, ground, per cm 45

Socket cut-outs are mostly a kitchen splashback question. Plan them in advance: once the glass is toughened, you cannot add a socket.

Toughening and bending, UAH per m²

Thickness, mm Clear Low-e Body-tinted
4 630 / 1,440 1,142 / 2,631 630 / 1,440
5 675 / 1,530 675 / 1,530
6 690 / 1,725 1,196 / 3,104 690 / 1,725
8 825 / 2,175 1,251 / 3,221 825 / 2,175
10 990 / 4,050 990 / 4,050
12 1,200 / 6,000 1,200 / 6,000

The first figure is flat toughening, the second is curved (bent) toughened glass. Technical limits worth knowing before you design anything:

  • maximum panel size 2400×4200 mm, minimum 250×300 mm;
  • panels smaller than 0.5 m² are charged as 0.5 m²;
  • for bent glass the minimum size is 600×800 mm, bending is single-plane only, and the minimum radius is 1200 mm.

Laminated glass production, UAH per m²

Build-up Standard interlayer ESG (from tempered)
3.3.1 to 6.6.1 2,067 2,892
8.8.1 to 12.12.1 2,892 3,717

Each additional layer adds UAH 1,050. A matt interlayer adds UAH 1,050 per m².

Delivery

Delivery within Odesa starts at UAH 1,200. Regional delivery is priced by route, distance, dimensions and weight. We confirm the exact figure when the order is placed.

Current pricing and the full range are on our glass sales page. Prices are valid as of {{PRICE_DATE}} and may change with the exchange rate and raw material costs, so we always confirm the final amount at the point of order.

What really moves the total

Three things can shift a quote by half again at identical dimensions.

The cutting layout. If your sizes nest neatly onto a standard sheet with minimal offcuts, you pay one price. If awkward geometry sends half the sheet to waste, you pay another. Sometimes changing a dimension by a couple of centimetres saves a noticeable amount — we point that out ourselves.

The edge finish. The gap between grinding and full polishing is significant. If the edge will not be visible, do not overpay for it.

Lead time. Standard glass is cut the same day or the next. Tempered glass needs furnace time — that is a separate production cycle. Plan ahead.

Edge finishes: the short version

Cut glass without edgework is a blade. A raw edge is only acceptable where it sits fully hidden in a profile or bead. Everywhere else, the edge gets worked.

  • Arrissing — the minimum. The edge stops cutting but stays matt and rough. For concealed edges.
  • Ground edge — an even matt finish. The standard choice for furniture glass and shelves.
  • Polished edge — the edge becomes clear and glossy like the glass itself. Mandatory for countertops, open shelves, doors and showers.
  • Bevel — an angled polished band around the perimeter that refracts light. A classic on mirrors and decorative inserts.

Advice from experience: never economise on polishing for shower partitions and glass doors. A wet hand runs along that edge daily, and a ground edge will eventually leave a scratch on it.

How to measure properly and save money doing it

Every week we get an order that has to be remade because of a measuring error. Glass is not laminate flooring; you cannot trim it on site. So here is the minimum checklist.

  1. Use a tape measure rather than a soft tape, and record everything in millimetres.
  2. Measure the opening in three places — top, middle, bottom — and use the smallest figure. Walls and cabinetry in Odesa are rarely perfectly square, especially in older buildings.
  3. Allow a technical gap. For glass in a recess that is usually 2–4 mm per side, though the exact figure depends on the fixing method — ask us.
  4. Check the diagonals. If they differ by more than 3–5 mm, a rectangle will not fit and you need a template.
  5. For complex shapes — rounded corners, notches around pipes, shaped edges — make a full-size cardboard template. It sounds tedious; it is also the only reliable method.
  6. Mark which side is up and which face is the front if the piece is asymmetrical or only partially edge-worked.

If in doubt, book a surveyor. A call-out in Odesa is inexpensive and is often credited against the order. One trip by a fitter costs less than one remade sheet of tempered glass.

Price it yourself: the online glass and mirror calculator

So you do not have to wait for a manager, we built an online calculator. You enter the glass type, thickness, dimensions, quantity, edge finish and holes, and the estimate appears immediately. It calculates on the same logic we do: blank area, linear metres of edge, and each hole individually.

Once the estimate is complete you can generate a commercial proposal and send it to yourself or to your client. Plenty of Odesa furniture makers and interior designers use it during client meetings so they can name a figure on the spot.

The calculator sits on the glass sales page, alongside the catalogue and current prices.

Open the glass and mirror calculator

One caveat: the calculator gives an accurate guide, but we confirm the final quote after checking the cutting layout. Sometimes it comes out cheaper than the calculator showed.

Glass cutting: lead times and how it works

Our workshop is in Tairove, which is convenient for the whole south-west of the city — Cheremushky, the Kyivskyi district, Arkadia and Velykyi Fontan. Straight cuts are usually done the same day. Complex shapes, large volumes and anything heading for the furnace take longer.

The sequence looks like this: dimensions received and checked for feasibility → layout optimisation → cutting → edgework → drilling → toughening if required → inspection → packing → delivery. The piece is checked at every stage, which is why defects very rarely reach the customer.

If you want the detail on the cutting service specifically — lead times, minimum sizes, what we can and cannot do — there is a separate article: glass cutting in Odesa: where to order and what it costs.

A special case: replacing the glass in a sealed unit

Fairly often someone calls to buy glass when what they actually need is a new insulated glass unit. These are different things. A sealed unit is an airtight assembly of two or three panes with a spacer bar and desiccant. You cannot swap one pane inside it on a kitchen table — a new unit gets built.

Signs that you need a unit rather than a pane: condensation between the panes, a crack in the window, a draught coming off the glass rather than the sash, or a window that has stopped holding heat. All of that is covered in our article on insulated glass unit replacement.

Glass and the yeVidnovlennya programme

A note on something that remains very relevant for Odesa, Chornomorsk and Yuzhne. If your home was damaged and you are restoring windows, balcony glazing or damaged structures, part of the work may be covered by the state programme yeVidnovlennya (єВідновлення).

OKNODOM is a registered participant. That means we prepare the documentation formally, work to the required standards and issue the full package needed for compensation. In practice, people often fail to apply simply because they do not realise their case qualifies, or because they expect the paperwork to be overwhelming. We go through this process regularly and guide customers on what to do and in what order.

If you are rebuilding, raise this before placing the order rather than after. Retrospective paperwork is much harder.

Where we deliver

The workshop is in Tairove, but our coverage is considerably wider than the address suggests. Within the city we deliver regularly to Cheremushky, the Kyivskyi, Prymorskyi and Khadzhybeiskyi districts, the centre, Moldavanka, Slobidka, Peresyp and Kotovskoho settlement. The immediate ring covers Chornomorsk, Yuzhne, Avanhard, Fontanka, Kryzhanivka and Tairove village. The coast is its own recurring story: Karolino-Buhaz and Zatoka, where we have hospitality clients.

We deliver glass to every city in the Odesa and Mykolaiv regions. That is not a figure of speech: Izmail, Bilhorod-Dnistrovskyi, Podilsk, Balta, Rozdilna, Ivanivka, Berezivka, Artsyz, Bolhrad, Reni, Kiliia, Tatarbunary, Zakharivka and Ovidiopol — and across Mykolaiv region to Mykolaiv, Pervomaisk, Voznesensk, Yuzhnoukrainsk, Novyi Buh, Bashtanka, Ochakiv and Snihurivka. If your town is not on the list, it does not mean we will not come — just call and ask. Recently we delivered glass to Marivka, Yosypivka, Velyka Dolyna and Dobrooleksandrivka, precisely the kind of villages that never appear on anyone’s delivery-area page.

Regional orders work slightly differently from city ones: they are usually consolidated into a batch and dispatched along a route, so it is worth agreeing a date in advance. Packing for long-distance delivery is reinforced — the glass travels in A-frames with spacers and every piece is labelled. The whole journey to Izmail or Pervomaisk is our responsibility: if something arrives damaged, we remake it without argument.

Two practical points worth thinking about in advance. Large-format glass does not fit a standard lift — measure the diagonal of the lift car. Tempered 10 and 12 mm in large sizes is genuinely heavy and needs at least two people to carry up a stairwell. And third: glass travels vertically in purpose-built frames, so “I’ll collect it in my car” almost never works — laid flat in a boot, a sheet breaks at the first pothole, and this city has no shortage of those.

Real cases from our practice

No abstractions here — three stories you can verify in our reviews.

A restaurant in Karolino-Buhaz and Zatoka: glass tops for rattan tables

Woven rattan tables with glass tops stand along the seafront. Sea air, wind, a full terrace all summer — the glass breaks from time to time, which is normal wear rather than anyone’s fault. The restaurant comes back to us continuously, and by now the process runs itself: we already hold their dimensions, so a replacement top is cut and finished without a repeat measurement and goes out to Zatoka on the next run.

What we advise every venue with tables like these: use tempered glass with a polished edge and rounded corners. It costs more than standard glass but breaks noticeably less often, and when it does break it turns to granules rather than shards under your guests’ feet. On a seaside terrace that matters. Second piece of advice: keep one or two spare tops so a table never leaves the floor while a new one is being made.

Marivka, Yosypivka and Velyka Dolyna: rebuilding after strikes under yeVidnovlennya

An order for 3 and 4 mm glass across three villages in the Odesa region at once. The residents were restoring homes after strikes and filing under the yeVidnovlennya programme. We prepared the full documentation package for the glass, manufactured it, delivered and installed — the three villages were consolidated into one route, so nobody waited longer than necessary.

This is exactly the case where it pays to ask about the programme before ordering. The paperwork is prepared alongside manufacturing, not afterwards. In their review the customer specifically noted that everything arrived on time — for regional deliveries that is unfortunately still rare, and we take it seriously.

Dobrooleksandrivka, Odesa region: full cycle from survey to installation

An example from an adjacent product line, but it illustrates how we work regionally. The client chose a Kömmerling profile on the recommendation of our manager Maryna, who ran the order from start to finish and stayed in contact at every stage, from survey through to installation. Her review came with photographs.

Glass works the same way: every order has a named person with a phone number who owns the result. Not a department, not a support desk — a manager who remembers your order.

Five mistakes that cost the most

  1. Ordering standard glass where tempered belongs. Showers, doors, balustrades, splashbacks behind a hob, anything at body height. The saving is measured in hundreds of hryvnia; the risk is measured in injuries.
  2. Measuring the opening in one place. Three points and both diagonals, every time.
  3. Forgetting the tolerance gap. Glass cut exactly to the opening will not go into the opening.
  4. Deciding on holes after toughening. All machining happens before the furnace.
  5. Skimping on edgework where the edge shows. It is visible, it snags clothing and it cuts.

Why customers buy their glass from us

OKNODOM has been working in Odesa for years, and glass is not a sideline for us — it is a full division with its own workshop. Because we also make windows, balconies and roller shutters, we see the whole task: if you need glass for a window opening, we will tell you straight away whether replacing the pane makes sense or whether a new sealed unit is the better answer. If it is glass for a balcony, we will tell you whether the structure will carry it.

We are official REHAU and VEKA partners, we participate in the yeVidnovlennya programme, and we work with private clients as well as furniture workshops, designers and developers. Survey, manufacturing, delivery and installation stay in one pair of hands, with no passing responsibility to “whoever cut it”.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to buy glass in Odesa?

Clear float glass cut to size starts at UAH 900 per m² in 4 mm, UAH 1,300 in 6 mm, UAH 1,800 in 8 mm and UAH 2,840 in 10 mm. Tempered glass starts at UAH 944 per m² in 4 mm and reaches UAH 15,000 per m² in 19 mm. All prices exclude edgework — grinding, polishing, holes and delivery are charged separately.

Can I order glass to my own dimensions?

Yes. Practically all our glass is cut to order; we hold almost no standard “ready-made” sizes, because every piece is made for a specific task.

How long does an order take?

Straight cuts are usually done the same day or the next. Pieces with edgework and drilling take one to several days. Tempered glass takes longer because toughening is a separate production cycle.

How does tempered glass differ from standard glass?

Tempered glass is several times stronger in impact and bending, and it breaks into small blunt granules rather than long sharp shards. It cannot be cut or drilled after toughening — all processing happens beforehand.

What thickness should I use for a shelf?

Up to 50 cm long, 4 mm is enough; up to 80 cm, use 6 mm; beyond that, 8 mm or an extra support. If the shelf will carry books, crockery or equipment, go one step thicker.

Is edgework necessary?

Yes, wherever the edge remains visible or reachable. An unworked edge cuts. The exception is an edge fully concealed within a profile or glazing bead.

How much does edgework cost?

Edgework is charged per linear metre of perimeter. A straight polished edge starts at UAH 36 per linear metre for 3 mm glass and UAH 86 for 6 mm; a curved edge starts at UAH 240. A 10 mm bevel starts at UAH 200 per linear metre, and drilling a hole starts at UAH 47.

How much is delivery?

Delivery within Odesa starts at UAH 1,200. Across the Odesa and Mykolaiv regions the price depends on distance, dimensions and weight, and is calculated by route.

Do you carry out site surveys?

Yes, across Odesa and also in Chornomorsk and Yuzhne. For complex openings and tempered glass orders we strongly recommend a survey by our fitter.

Can I collect the glass myself?

You can, provided you have suitable transport. Glass must travel vertically and secured. Laid flat in a car boot, a sheet will almost certainly break.

Do you deliver outside Odesa?

Yes, we deliver to every city in the Odesa and Mykolaiv regions — Izmail, Bilhorod-Dnistrovskyi, Podilsk, Balta, Artsyz, Bolhrad, Mykolaiv, Pervomaisk, Voznesensk, Ochakiv and others. Regional deliveries run by route, so it is best to agree a date in advance.

Do you work under the yeVidnovlennya programme?

Yes, OKNODOM participates in the programme. We prepare the required documentation and guide you through the steps for claiming compensation when restoring damaged housing.

Do you work with furniture workshops and designers?

Yes. Regular trade partners get dedicated terms: priority lead times, order intake by item list, and pricing through the calculator with a generated commercial proposal.
