Backlit Mirrors and a Glass Shower for an Apartment in Kandinsky Residence, Odesa
Oleksandr Tisovskyi, VIKNODIM · 22.10.2026
The apartment is in Kandinsky Odessa Residence, 63/65 Frantsuzkyi Boulevard, Prymorskyi district (Malyi Fontan), Odesa. The owner renovated it from bare walls and handed us everything made of glass: backlit mirrors, a shower enclosure and frameless tempered glass partitions with tinting. In this case study I explain what problem each piece solved and how we built it. Further down you will find our prices for mirror glass and answers to the questions people usually ask before ordering a custom backlit mirror.

What the owner needed
Dark walls, a lot of wood and no window in the entrance hall. In the evening the hall felt cramped and dim. The owner wanted it to look bigger and wanted to see herself head to toe before leaving the house.
In the bathroom she ruled out a shower tray and a curtain from the start. She needed an enclosure that is easy to clean and does not look like a plastic box in the corner.
The partitions had their own task. The apartment had to be split into zones while daylight still reached the far rooms, and the whole flat should not be visible from the front door.
A large round mirror in the entrance hall
For the hall we made a round mirror in a thin black frame. We chose the diameter so that an adult fits inside the circle completely. The photo below was taken right after installation.

The LED strip is hidden behind the glass. Light falls on the wall around the frame, so the mirror seems to float. It does not dazzle, and you see your face and clothes without glare.
The halo works together with the linear ceiling lights and the strip near the floor. When only the mirror is on in the evening, there is enough light to put your shoes on. The wood panels reflect in the glass, and the hall looks deeper than it is.

What matters when installing a large mirror
A large mirror is heavy, and there is a power supply and an LED strip behind it. The cable should come out of the wall before the finishing coat, otherwise someone has to cut into a painted wall. We give the electrician a drawing of where the wire must be. The gap between glass and wall is set so the light forms an even ring without hot spots. We usually keep the bottom edge above the floor so a mop or a robot vacuum does not hit it.
The same mirrors for bedrooms and corridors
Halo backlighting is a popular choice for the bedroom too, above a dressing table. Below is a round mirror from another of our apartments in Odesa. The socket sits under the table and the cable hides behind the furniture. By day it is a plain mirror, at night it replaces a wall lamp.

In a narrow space between two doors we fit a rectangular full-length mirror lit around the perimeter. More examples are at the end of the article.

Types of mirror lighting
Decide before the measurement visit, because the type of lighting dictates where the cable must come out.
Halo (rear) lighting. The strip sits behind the mirror, the glass stays clear, and you see the light as a glow on the wall. It suits halls and bedrooms.
Front lighting. We remove the silver backing in a ring or a band, put the strip behind it, and the light shines forward onto your face. This is the option for bathrooms and make-up. Below is one mirror with the light off and on.

The two can be combined. Light colour can be warm, neutral or cool. With wood, as in Kandinsky Residence, warm light looks best.
Black-frame glass shower
The Kandinsky bathroom has a glass shower in a black profile that matches the mixer and the dark wood. There is no tray and no step at the entrance. We recommend this layout to almost everyone renovating from scratch: the floor is tiled with a slope to a linear drain, so there is no threshold to trip over. The photos below show similar enclosures from our other projects.

For doors we use 8 mm tempered glass. If it breaks, it falls into small blunt pieces. The door hangs on glass-to-wall or glass-to-glass hinges and has a long vertical handle. A niche with shelves is best left inside the enclosure.
A pentagonal enclosure works well in a corner with large marble-look tiles. It takes less space at the entrance and gives a wide door.

Sizes, door types and glass care are covered on our page about custom shower enclosures in Odesa.
Tinted tempered glass partitions
The partitions in the apartment are frameless glass. Daylight from the windows passes further in, while figures behind the glass look blurred. In her review the owner pointed out that the tint gave privacy without making the interior feel heavy.
Custom mirror prices
The price is made up of the mirror glass, edge finishing, frame, lighting and installation. Glass is charged by area:
| Mirror glass, 4 mm | Price, UAH/m² |
|---|---|
| Silver | 1340 |
| Graphite | 1840 |
| Bronze | 1840 |
| Satin bronze | 2020 |
| Satin | 2440 |
| Satin graphite | 2725 |
| MORENA | 3540 |
For example, a 60 × 160 cm silver mirror has an area of 0.96 m², so the glass costs about 1290 UAH. Edge polishing, bevel, holes, lighting, frame and installation are quoted separately. We give the exact price after measuring, and a rough estimate if you send the sizes on Viber.

FAQ
How large can a round mirror be?
The limits are the size of the glass sheet and the way into the apartment. A circle you can see yourself in head to toe, like the one in Kandinsky Residence, is a regular order for us. Before production we check that the mirror will pass through the doors and the lift.
Do I need an electrician for a backlit mirror?
You need a cable outlet or a socket nearby. If the renovation is not finished, we give the electrician a drawing and the wire hides behind the mirror. In a finished interior the mirror can run from the nearest socket.
What is the difference between halo and front lighting?
Halo lighting shines onto the wall from behind the mirror. Front lighting passes through a frosted ring or band in the glass and lights your face. Front lighting is better for bathrooms and make-up, halo lighting for halls and bedrooms.
Can a large mirror hang on plasterboard?
Yes, if the wall has reinforcement or a fixing plate inside. Without it the weight should go to fixings in the main wall. We decide this at the measurement visit, before painting.
How much does a made-to-measure mirror cost?
4 mm mirror glass costs from 1340 UAH/m² for silver to 3540 UAH/m² for MORENA. Edge finishing, lighting, frame and installation are added on top. We give the exact price after measuring.
