Object: Odesa National Academic Theater of Opera and Ballet

The theater building is an architectural monument of the late 19th century, built in 1887 according to the design of Viennese architects Ferdinand Fellner and Hermann Helmer in the style of Viennese Baroque. The interior of the auditorium is stylized as late French Rococo, and the facade is decorated with sculptural groups, busts of Pushkin, Glinka, Griboyedov, and Gogol.

Why this object is special:

Problem: The theater’s windows are large, situated at a significant height, and in hard-to-reach places. Replacing the glass with impact-resistant alternatives is impossible due to requirements for preserving the historical appearance. A solution was needed that would protect the glass while remaining invisible.

Solution: 300-micron anti-shock film

What is 300-micron anti-shock film

Anti-shock (security) film is a multi-layer polyester material applied to the inside of the glass. A thickness of 300 microns (12 mil) corresponds to the P2A (SM-4) protection class according to GOST 32563-2013 and can withstand three drops of a 4.11 kg steel ball from a height of 3 meters.

Key characteristics:

Transparency — up to 90% visible light transmission

UV protection — blocks up to 98% of ultraviolet rays

Splinter retention — the glass remains in the frame if shattered

Invisibility — does not distort the view or alter the facade’s appearance

Stages of work

  1. Object inspection (3 days) – OKNODOM technologists studied every window: dimensions, access, glass condition, frame type – Created a window map indicating access difficulty – Coordinated the work schedule with the theater administration
  2. Surface preparation (5 days) – Cleaning glass from dust, grease, and old stickers – Degreasing with special solutions – Checking glass integrity (cracks, chips)
  3. Film installation (35 days) – Work in hard-to-reach places — scaffolding, lifts, climbing gear – Applying film using the “wet” installation method (solution + squeegee) – Removing bubbles, edge trimming, finishing
  4. Acceptance (2 days) – Inspecting every glass pane for transparency and absence of bubbles or folds – Splinter retention test (control hammer strike on a sample) – Signing the certificate of completed work

Challenges solved

Problem 1: Height and access – Windows in the auditorium at a height of 8–12 meters – Boxes and galleries — narrow passages, impossible to use standard scaffolding

Solution: A combination of mobile lifts, telescopic towers, and climbing gear

Problem 2: Preserving the architectural appearance – The film must not be visible from the street – Tinted or mirrored films cannot be used

Solution: Ultra-transparent 300-micron film with 90% light transmission — practically invisible on the glass

Problem 3: Working in an active theater – Must not interfere with rehearsals and performances – Noise and dust — restricted

Solution: Working at night and during breaks between sessions, using silent tools, daily cleaning
