Window film in Odessa: frosted, impact-resistant, and sun-blocking. Which one should you choose for your needs?

Author: Illia Borysovych Kaprishanskyi, VIKNODIM manager in charge of tinting and film orders. Updated: October 2026.

In short

  • Frosted film hides the room from prying eyes on the street and lets daylight through. We apply it directly to installed double-glazed units, with no need to remove the windows.
  • Impact-resistant film comes in 100, 200, 300 and 400 micron thicknesses. It holds glass fragments together when a blast wave or impact hits the window.
  • Architectural films include tinted, sun control, mirror and energy-saving types. They cut heat in the room in summer and heat loss in winter.
  • Timeline: 2–3 working days from measurement to finished windows, as at the medical center at 2a Velyka Arnautska St.
  • Starting prices on the website: protective film from UAH 324/m², energy-saving film from UAH 504/m², installation included.

People rarely order window film for the film itself. They come with a problem: the reception desk is visible from the sidewalk. Or the office hits +30 °C after lunch and the monitor is full of glare. Or after a night attack the neighbors were collecting glass across the whole room, and now they worry about their children. Each of these tasks has its own type of film, and below I break down what exactly we apply, how it looks on a real project and how long it takes.

Where to Start: Your Task and the Film That Solves It

Your task Film type What you get
Ground floor, the room is visible from the street Frosted or decorative Light passes through, people and screens are hidden from the street
Worried about glass fragments after shelling Impact-resistant 100–200 microns Broken glass stays on the film instead of flying into the room
Shop window, bank, cash desk, ground floor Impact-resistant 300–400 microns Glass withstands impact longer, break-in is harder
Heat, fading furniture, glare on screens Sun control or mirror Less heat gain and blinding light
Cold near windows in winter Energy-saving Glass loses less heat to the outside
Glass partitions, offices, doors Frosted, stripes, decorative Privacy in the office while light stays

Case Study: Medical Center at 2a Velyka Arnautska St.

Armolan “Pearl” frosted film was applied at the medical center at 2a Velyka Arnautska St. in 2–3 working days without removing windows, and the interior is no longer visible from the street.

The medical center is on the ground floor, with windows facing the street and the parking lot. From the sidewalk you could see the reception, the offices and the server room. For a clinic this is a problem: patients do not want to be watched from the street, and staff do not want to work as if in a shop window.

We proposed Armolan “Pearl” frosted film. It was applied to all lower and upper sections of the double-glazed units, without removing the windows or stopping the clinic’s work.

Parameter What was done
Site Medical center, ground floor, 2a Velyka Arnautska St., Odesa
Task Hide the interior from the street without losing light
Film Armolan “Pearl”, frosted
Where applied Reception, offices, server room, upper and lower sections of the glass units
Timeline 2–3 working days from measurement to finished windows
Dismantling Not required, film applied to installed glass units

What is worth taking from this case. Frosted film solves privacy more cheaply than blinds on every window and does not collect dust. But look at the sample in the evening with the lights on: in the dark, silhouettes can show through from the street, and it is better to know this before installation.

Another Project: Derby Business Center, 6a Fontanska Road

At the Derby business center, sandblast-effect film was applied to the glass facade of the ground floor and the doors without replacing any glass units.

The ground floor of the Derby business center is fully glazed: floor-to-ceiling stained-glass windows and glass doors. Before installation the whole interior was visible from the sidewalk. We applied sandblasted-glass-effect film to the windows and doors, and the glass units stayed in place.

The result is clear in the photo taken against the sun: light passes through the glass, but what is inside cannot be seen. From inside, the street turns into a blurred picture, while the room stays bright.

A window before and after installation shows the difference well: the upper part has frosted film, the lower part is still clear.

Which Films We Apply

VIKNODIM applies five types of film: frosted and decorative, impact-resistant 100–400 microns, tinted and sun control, mirror, and energy-saving.

Frosted and Decorative

Frosted film gives a sandblasted-glass effect. Light is diffused, and it is impossible to make out what is behind the glass. We apply it over the whole pane or in stripes at eye level to keep a view from above. It suits offices, meeting rooms, bathrooms, glass doors and partitions. Besides white frosted film, there are patterned, striped, reeded-glass-effect and colored options.

Impact-Resistant (Security Film)

A transparent multilayer film that, once applied, holds glass fragments on its adhesive layer. It will not protect against a direct hit, but in a blast wave the glass does not scatter across the room. We have written about it separately: armored window film in Odesa and which security film to choose and how much it costs.

Thickness Designation Tensile strength* Where we use it
100 microns 4 mil 19 kg/cm Apartments, offices, retail halls
200 microns 8 mil 31 kg/cm Apartments and houses in areas at risk of shelling, shelters
300 microns 12 mil 59 kg/cm Shop windows, banks, cash desks, notaries
400 microns 16 mil 71 kg/cm Sites with elevated break-in risk

The thicker the film, the longer the glass withstands impact, but the film is slightly more noticeable on the glass and costs more. For an apartment, 100–200 microns is usually enough; 300–400 microns is used where burglary resistance matters. An example of a historic building with such film: impact-resistant film on the windows of the Odesa Opera and Ballet Theater.

Architectural: Tinted, Sun Control, Mirror

These films reflect part of the solar heat and ultraviolet light. The room is cooler, furniture and floors do not fade, and glare disappears from monitors. Mirror films also hide the interior by day: from the street you see a reflection, not what is inside. In the evening with the lights on, the effect disappears. How sun control film worked in an office: office window tinting at 5 Sonyachna St., where the temperature dropped by 5 °C. For panoramic glazing: panoramic window tinting, Rosenthal residential complex, Lymanka.

Energy-Saving

Transparent films with a metallized layer that returns thermal radiation back into the room. Near the window it is warmer in winter and there is less heat gain in summer. The view from the window barely changes, because these films have high light transmission.

The full list of films and how to choose them is on the service page: window tinting in Odesa. On protective films separately: impact-resistant and anti-shatter films.

How Installation Works

Installation takes five steps: measurement, estimate, glass preparation, wet application and drying.

  1. Measurement and selection. We come, measure every pane and show film samples on your window in daylight.
  2. Estimate. We calculate the area by the glass, not by the opening, and name the price before work begins.
  3. Glass preparation. We wash the glass, remove old films and stickers, and clear dust from the corners by the glazing bead.
  4. Application. The film goes on with a wet mounting solution; we squeegee the water out from the center to the edges and trim around the glass perimeter.
  5. Drying. For the first days the film may look slightly cloudy while moisture escapes. The glass can be washed after about a week.

At the medical center, it took 2–3 working days from measurement to finished windows.

How Much Window Film Costs

Window film in Odesa costs from UAH 324/m² for protective film and from UAH 504/m² for energy-saving film, installation included. These are starting prices from the service page. Frosted, mirror and sun control films are priced individually. The final amount depends on the following:

  • film type and brand, and for impact-resistant film also its thickness;
  • area and number of panes, because small panes take longer to cover;
  • condition of the glass and whether old film must be removed;
  • floor and access to the windows, including whether a ladder or lift is needed;
  • full coverage versus stripes and patterns.

Mistakes When Choosing Film

The most common mistakes are choosing the wrong film type for the task and the wrong thickness of impact-resistant film.

  1. Choosing mirror film for privacy and being surprised in the evening that everything is visible from the street. For round-the-clock privacy you need frosted film.
  2. Installing 50-micron impact-resistant film because it is cheaper. This thickness is used for mirrors and will not hold a window against a blast wave.
  3. Applying film themselves on dry glass. Bubbles and dust stayed under it, and they had to redo it with new film.
  4. Not accounting for the glass unit type. Dark sun control films can overheat the glass on some glass units, so they are selected with the construction in mind.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you see through frosted film from the street?

Not in daytime; only diffused light is visible. In the evening with the lights on, silhouettes of people standing close to the glass may show through. Check a sample in the dark before installation.

Which impact-resistant film should I choose for an apartment?

For an apartment, 100–200 microns is usually enough. The 200-micron film is popular in residential buildings: it holds glass fragments and is almost invisible on the glass.

Do the windows have to be removed to apply the film?

No. We apply the film to installed glass units from inside the room. Exterior films are applied from outside if there is access to the glass.

How long does installation take?

A small site such as the medical center on Velyka Arnautska takes 2–3 working days from measurement.

How long does the film last?

It depends on the type and brand. According to suppliers, manufacturers give a warranty of 3 to 10 years on architectural films applied inside the room.

Can impact-resistant and tinted film be combined?

Yes. There are impact-resistant films with a tint or mirror layer. They hold fragments together and reduce heat at the same time.

How much does window film cost in Odesa?

Protective film from UAH 324/m², energy-saving film from UAH 504/m², installation included. Frosted and sun control films are priced after measurement.
